Networking and the job hunt

“It’s not what you know, but who you know” is probably a phrase you have heard all too many times before. How true is this old adage? Here are some tips to help you use your acquaintances to find that perfect job.

Funnily enough, you already know how to network – you do it all the time. Just striking up a conversation with a stranger, or introducing yourself to other parent’s at your child’s school. All of the people you meet on a day to day basis can help you on your job hunt.

Why is networking effective? Mostly because people want to do business with people they already know and like. When there is a pile of CVs and cover letters to sift through, an employer is much more likely to focus in on the one they already know. There may not even be a job advertised, but if you know the right people, you could be first in line for a new position!
